Political Discourse in India and the Deterioration of Values

The assembly elections in poll-bound states soon after the general elections 2014 have witnessed so far a worrisome and troublesome phenomena. The Indian political discourse by and large revolved around certain values such as 'unity in diversity,' 'brotherhood' and 'secularism'. Unfortunately the values for which our political leadership stood so far have vanished all of a sudden. Day by day there are new threats to values and people who stand for. I base my observations on facts available to anyone who is intellectually open.

I was pleasantly surprised when the Union Government of India called 1994 massacre of Sikhs in the capital a genocide. It was indeed a welcome move. I am sure if this massacre is to probed without political motives, it is certainly alleviate the pain of those who await justice. However, I can only call this dubious stance of a political party which leaves no stone unturned to capture power in the capital. If you are so concerned about the safety of the citizens of this country, I ask, how come less than a year after you took over government so many atrocities committed against the minorities. Five Churches in the capital of this country have been vandalised so far.

You consider rather you call the 1994 riots in Delhi a genocide - we welcome that.  We then have a few intriguing questions. Why don't you call the Gujarat riots as genocide or at least the massacre. Why don't you hold responsible those who were ruling the state. Sorry, I am asking the impossible! If you can hold the Chief Minister of Assam for the massacre of a tribe in Assam by another tribe or terrorists of another tribe, why shouldn't the then Chief Minister of Gujarat be morally bound to apologize and undo the wrongs meted out to a particular group? Why haven't anyone spoken about the massacre of Christians in Kandhamal?

The political discourse in India today moves towards bulldozing the fundamental freedom of the citizens. It moves towards a tomorrow in which 'diversity' will no longer exist; it moves towards a tomorrow in which we will suspect one another. It is a politics of hatred and division. The saddest thing to be noted here is the fact that we haven't heard enough voices against the bulldozers of freedom. It is not all about religious freedom; it is about human freedom. The silence of good people lets the hate-mongers to go scot-free in the society.
